A Grocery Company
Built on Faith and Family
In 1930, Ben Norrenberns opened the Norrenberns Meat Market in the small town of Albers, Illinois.
Ben’s son, Tom, born in 1931, would later join the family business as a meat cutter at the small shop. Tom and his wife, Betty Ann, eventually became owners of Tom’s Supermarkets, with stores in multiple Southwestern Illinois towns, including Mascoutah.
The store ownership was passed onto the next generation when Tom’s sons—Don, John, and TJ—took over the family business. In 1995, TJ Norrenberns purchased Red Bud IGA, which achieved IGA Retailer of the Year in 1998. TJ expanded the business in 2005 with the purchase of the Millstadt IGA store as well.
In 2007, TJ and his family were recognized by the Catholic Diocese of Belleville, Illinois, as one of the first recipients of The Messenger’s Faith in the Marketplace Award nominated by their readers.
With over 40 years of experience in the supermarket industry, TJ is now passing on his knowledge to his son, Craig.
In 2019, the Millstadt Illinois Chamber of Commerce awarded TJ and Craig Norrenberns with the Business persons of the Year Award for their years of dedicated service.
And then in 2021, Craig Norrenberns bought the old Tom’s Supermarket in Mascoutah and will be transforming it into Betty Ann Market, the only remaining independent grocer in Mascoutah. Named for his grandmother, the store will carry on the family tradition of exceptional service to its guests and its community.
Together, Betty Ann Market, Red Bud IGA, and Millstadt IGA are proud to serve Southern Illinoisans from past to present.
